My son committed suicide in 1999. I have a memoir coming out in May about his bipolar disorder and how our family survived his death.

I am falling into a hole. I catch myself digging so you are reminding me to stop. Right now I have bioplar depression with suicidal thoughts, but they come and go throughout the day. It has not progressed to all day long, or rather, I have not become so weakened as to give in to it and devise my plan, which didn't work last time. I do know what helps: When someone from my family calls out of the blue and says they love me and are worried about me. I usually keep the message and play it over and over. Believing no one cares is a bridge directly to the hole.
Another thing that helps: Get out and help other people in crisis. I wasn't going to go to work, wasn't sure I was strong enough, but when I got there I was a guardian and protector. I am a mental health counselor at a crisis center. I let my love pour out to the clients in crisis today, the young man who had just stabbed himself but lived, the woman who only yesterday left the facility naked and cut herself. I loved them today and in doing that I loved life itself. Tonight I believe in recovery and myself.

A lesson for family of a person with depresion.
My family tolerated my major depression for 10 years...they interpteted my lack of expression and my reticence to be with them for activities i used to love as my no longer caring about being with them.. my no longer loving them. I, at first, interpteted my loss of enjoyment with them as coming from a change in their feelings about me.In reality, my depression was a kind of emotional and expressive paralysis that masked the love i felt for them and my need to be with them. I could sense the distance growing between us and grieved the loss.But i couldn't find a way to get across that gap.By the time i realized how depressed I was and sought professional help, my wife had decided to divorce me. i lost my home and family.Social workers with my doctor had a family education program, but it was to late to get my family's understanding.
The lesson: when psychologists describe this symptom as withdrawal[which connotes an act of rejecting, not wanting to be with others], that is a description of looking from outside the person'S change in behavior...AND NOT THE DYNAMICS WITHIN. It is not to be taken personally...to forgive the behavior, surpressing anger enough to draw the person out
to break the chains with the strength of love and gentle understanding. Over the years as I healed, my family can see the heart i have for them.I have been able to let my heart speak for me through my poetry.

Thank you very much for what you are doing. There is a great need for information and sentiment to help lessen the stigma attached to suicide and depression. Having nowhere to turn is often a last straw for individual - hopefully sites like ours will help to give them a place to go. Prayers for your friend.
